Former Kirkcaldy firefighter Stevie McCrorie has donated the guitar he used on The Voice to charity.
Stevie, 30, from Alva, Clackmannanshire is raising funds for ex-Celtic striker John Hartson’s cancer charity.
He has also agreed to be an ambassador for the John Hartson Foundation after he joined the former Wales international and a host of sports stars to launch a new testicular cancer awareness campaign at the charity’s recent golf day.
John who also starred for Arsenal, West Ham and won 51 caps for Wales fought a life-threatening battle with the disease in 2009 after ignoring lumps on his testicle for four years.
Dad-of-one Stevie, who is taking a break from his day job as a firefighter to concentrate on his musical career, said: “John’s story really touched me. As a firefighter I’m used to working with guys and we do have a tendency not to talk about these things and to think it’s macho to hide any worries.
“But when you see what happened to John and what he went through because he ignored his health problems, it really brings home the importance of breaking those boundaries and not being shy.
“Men tend to be old school and don’t want to talk about those sort of things but it’s really important that we do, and that we take his advice and look regularly for any signs that something might need to be checked out .”
Stevie was one of 25 sports and showbiz stars who captained teams for the recent Foundation golf day at Mar Hall Golf and Spa Resort, near Glasgow.
They included ex-Rangers bosses Walter Smith and Ally McCoist, former Celts Chris Sutton, Alan Stubbs, Neil Lennon and Frank McAvennie, and Insane Fight Club wrestler Grado.
John said: “Stevie is a great lad and we’re delighted to welcome him on board and appreciate all the support he’s given us so far.”
Fans can bid for Stevie’s signed Martin DCPA4 Rosewood guitar on eBay.
He bought the instrument for £1300 just a year ago and played it as he gigged around Scotland, throughout his journey on The Voice, and during recent gigs and special events.
Since being crowned winner, he has also composed songs on it, some of which will be on his new album.
Bidding for Stevie’s guitar closes on Saturday, May 16.
