Man fined after climbing through sunroof of moving car to strip off

An Arbroath man clambered through the sunroof of a car and started to strip off while being driven on a busy Fife road, a court has heard.

Devyn Bell’s actions were described as “remarkably stupid” and “extremely dangerous” at Cupar Sheriff Court on Monday, where he pleaded guilty to committing a breach of the peace.

The 20-year-old, of Beechwood Road, was fined £540 for the incident, which took place on the A914 and A915 on the morning of May 5 last year.

It comes less than a year after he was fined in the same court for another bizarre car-related incident, when he admitted driving his car across a St Andrews golf course.

The court heard that Bell had also been leaning out of the passenger door with his top off, with the car travelling around 40mph.

Depute fiscal Joanne Smith told the court that Bell had been travelling as part of a convoy to a car show at Crail at the time of the incident.

“Two female witnesses were travelling southbound on the A914 towards St Andrews,” she said.

“There was a line of three cars travelling ahead of them. The lead vehicle was a Nissan Micra, which was being driven with the accused as a front-seat passenger.

“Just after the corner at Drumoig, the accused came up through the sunroof of the Micra. At that time he was fully clothed.

“He began removing his upper clothing and sat on the roof with his feet still in the car. The buttocks of the accused were partially exposed.”

She continued: “As the car reached Guardbridge, the accused opened the passenger door and was seen leaning out of the vehicle.”

Defending solicitor William Rennie said: “Mr Bell was in high spirits. He and his friends, who were travelling in the two cars behind, were on their way to a car show in Crail and he was showing off to them.”

Sheriff Charles Macnair was damning in his sentencing of the apprentice joiner, saying: “This was remarkably stupid and extremely dangerous behaviour.

“I can just about justify dealing with this through a financial penalty. If you had not pleaded guilty I would have fined you £600 but that will be reduced to £540.”

In February of last year, Mr Bell was fined £350 after driving his car on cart paths at the Fairmont Golf Resort, St Andrews.

He was chased by staff in golf buggies after taking to the course in a bid to flee a mob of angry cyclists. He pleaded guilty to careless driving and driving on land that was not a road.
