The blaze broke out at the Randolph Industrial Estate in Kirkcaldy.

A 16-year-old male has been arrested and charged in connection with a major fire at a Kirkcaldy scrapyard this week.

Officers from the Fife Division of Police Scotland have thanked the people of Kirkcaldy for responding to their appeal for witnesses to the fire, as the information they provided helped lead to the man’s arrest.

The fire, which closed the East Coast rail line for a time on Monday morning, saw 70 firefighters tackle the blaze in which more than 100 cars were destroyed and flames and smoke threatened houses.

Following the request appealing for information from the public, and an investigation by Fife Division of Police Scotland, a 16-year-old youth was taken into custody and charged in connection with the incident.

He is expected to appear at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court.

Detective Sergeant Colin Robson said: “This was a large-scale fire that has caused substantial damage to the premises and more than 100 cars.

“The initial priority of the police and fire service at the time was to ensure the safety of the public and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their cooperation and assistance during this inquiry, as that led to the person responsible being traced.”
