Lunan Bay parking upgrade nears completion

Kim Cessford, Courier - 10.04.11 - work continues on the controversial upgrade of the carpark at Lunan Bay

Work to upgrade the car park at one of Angus’ most attractive beauty spots is nearing completion.

The programme of improvement at Lunan Bay has seen potholes filled, and a new board walk and set of steps leading to the beach fitted.

Warning and information signs are to be renewed and new litter bins put in place.

The upgrade cost £90,000 and is seen by Angus Council as an investment in an area that is the “jewel in the crown” of the county. However prior to the work beginning many councillors voiced concerns as the local authority do not own the land.

The current car park was put in by the council over 25 years ago and the local authority holds the lease on the ground until 2027.

The access road to the car park was upgraded in 2001 but the surface of the car park had become badly potholed and required complete resurfacing.

Incidents of inappropriate use have been reported at the car park, which was designed to encourage one-way traffic. Litter bins and the boardwalk were subject to vandalism.

In his report on the area to the council, infrastructure services director Eric Lowson said the car park looked run down in contrast to its surroundings.

By the time the development is finished, parking capacity will be increased and the entrance widened to accommodate two-way traffic, while bays will be remodelled and enlarged to allow an additional 25 vehicles.

Additional tree planting will be carried out to enhance the area.
