An Angus couple’s bid to send their twin daughters to the US for life-changing surgery has received a £1000 boost.
Local businessman Colin Landsburgh, who owns the Spar on Carnoustie High Street, made the donation after reading of the plight of two-year-old Ayley and Chloe Hirsch in The Courier.
The girls suffer from cerebral palsy, and their parents Averil and Frazer had resigned themselves to the idea that they would never walk until they read of the remarkable progress Perthshire toddler Jack McNaughton has made since an operation at St Louis’ Children’s Hospital in Missouri.
The procedure, called selective dorsal rhizotomy, is carried out by surgeon T. S. Park and eliminates pain and spasticity in the limbs. Averil said she was “very grateful” for the continued support of the local community.
This has ensured the family has raised £5000 of its £80,000 target in just two weeks. She added, “To get such a big donation early on is fantastic and I can’t believe that we’ve raised so much already. Now we just need to keep the momentum going. I’m absolutely determined to get a date for the operation before the end of the year.”
Colin said he hoped to become more involved in raising money for the fund as the campaign, which is supported by The Courier, progressed.
