Programme for teachers’ work/life balance day yet to be decided, council says

The programme for an Angus teachers’ training day has not been finalised yet, the local authority says.

As we reported on Wednesday, the Work/Life Balance Day takes place on May 27 and is part of the latest in-service day.

Teachers are being offered time to go on organised “life-enhancing” activities, such as go-karting, visiting the cinema or even taking drives or walks in the countryside with colleagues during school hours. The teachers would have to cover the cost of any paid-for activities.

The Courier has asked Angus Council for a full, detailed programme of events.

A spokeswoman said the programme for the three schools that are involved are not finalised yet, but added they would be passed on once that happens.

She added, “There are two in-service days scheduled for staff at Angus’ 53 primary schools and eight secondary schools at the end of May.

“On Friday, May 27, staff will be considering improvement plans for their individual schools and looking at different aspects of curriculum activity, with Monday, May 30, devoted to the Curriculum for Excellence.

“Three of our secondary schools plan to use part of the Friday afternoon for a variety of team-building and development opportunities to encourage more cross-curricular working within their schools.

“The education department is currently discussing the specific programme of activities with the three schools but it is anticipated that most activities will be school based.”

The TaxPayers’ Alliance earlier said the in-service day move “beggared belief”.

“It’s ridiculous to give teachers time off work to go to the movies or go-karting,” said spokeswoman Emma Boon. “These are the sorts of extras that hard-pressed parents will cut back on when money’s tight.”
