A brave Dundee pensioner has been praised after confronting an intruder in his partner’s home.
The 71-year-old was in bed when his 75-year-old partner heard noises coming from the living room of her sheltered house in Rosebank Place early on Wednesday.
Undeterred, the OAP left the bedroom to investigate and found himself face-to-face with a man in his 20s who had broken his way in via a living room window.
The thug had already snatched the householder’s purse and had been raking through coffee table drawers when disturbed.
Caught in the act, the startled robber tried to escape from the flat and in the process made a verbal threat to the man as the pair squared up.
Without a thought for his own safety, the man grabbed a dinner plate lying on the table and threw it at the thief as he fled down the hallway and out of the flat.
He made off with the woman’s purse containing around £60, some cigarettes and some documents.
The man’s partner — who is on oxygen for a medical condition and asked not to be named — has only been living at the Abertay Housing Association complex for the past three weeks.DistressedShe said she had been left extremely distressed by the incident, but paid tribute to her partner’s bravery in confronting the man.
Scheme manager Jacky Inglis said she had worked at the complex for 14 years and the 5.40am break-in had been the first time there had been any trouble.
She commended the householder and her partner for their handling of the incident and said she was delighted no one had been hurt.
Police remain on the hunt for the intruder and have carried out inquiries in the area.
The trespasser is described as between 20 and 30, slim, with short black hair, who was wearing a black patterned top, black jacket and blue jeans.
Anyone who has information about his identity is urged to contact police immediately on 0300 111 2222 or speak to any officer.
