Retired Dundee newsagent William (Bill) Crawford has died, aged 76.

He collapsed and died while attending a nativity play at Clepington Primary School last Thursday.

Members of the audience, including a doctor and a nurse, attempted to resuscitate him however, they were unsuccessful and he was declared dead at the scene.

The performance was cancelled and children and parents were sent home.

Bill and his wife, Elizabeth, ran the newsagent in Caird Avenue, Dundee, for more than 20 years prior to his retirement in 1997.

The couple married in 1959 and celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary earlier this year.

Born and raised in Dundee, he attended Mitchell Street Primary School and Stobswell Boys School.

A member of the Sea Cadets in his teens, he represented Scotland at a convention in Canada when he was 17.

He started working as a trainee with John Menzies in Dundee at the age of 15.

He quickly progressed through the ranks, becoming a store manager with the company in Dundee, Perth, Blairgowrie, Dunfermline and Newcastle before setting up his own newsagents in Dundee in 1976.

While a newsagent in Dundee, he was president of the Dundee branch of the National Federation of Retail Newsagents and was presented with a lifetime honorary president award in recognition of his work with the organisation.

Bill was also a lifelong Dundee United supporter, following his team at home and abroad and was one of the founding members of the Dundee United Business Club.

He is survived by his wife and daughters Ann, a former reporter with the People’s Journal, and Mandy, manager of the Royal Tay Yacht Club.

His seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren live in Dundee, Cambridge and London.
