Investment consultant and research scientist Dr Jim Robertson

Dr Jim Robertson, a former dux of Morgan Academy in Dundee, who enjoyed careers as a research scientist and an investment consultant has died at his Cheshire home.

He won the history medal in 1961 and was captain of the school cricket team as well as playing for the rugby team and qualifying as a rugby referee.

In his time in Dundee he was a member of the city squadron of the Air Training Corps and achieved a glider pilot’s licence.

Dr Robertson went on to study electrical engineering for four years at Dundee College of Technology (forerunner of Abertay University) and obtained further qualifications at Birmingham and Warwick where he gained a PhD in 1971 and graduated as a chartered engineer.

He was first employed by IMI at Kidderminster, where he was a technical officer analysing trials for Rocket Motors.

A move to Cheshire saw him employed for seven years as a senior research scientist with ICI.

After being made redundant due to the change in economic climate, he returned to study and went to Manchester Business School where he gained a postgraduate qualification in business finance.

This allowed him to set up as an investment consultant in the financial analysis sector working predominantly for Hill Samuel Merchant Banking covering Cheshire and Wales.

He became their highest achieving investments consultant, but once investments moved off-shore he went to his final post in financial investments with Blackstone Franks.

From the early 1990s until his death, Dr Robertson worked from home studying the investment markets and pursuing his hobbies of house renovations and piano playing.

A frequent visitor to Dundee, he organised the 100th birthday celebrations of his father, also Jim.

The family home in Dundee was in Baxter Park Terrace and Dr Robertson was a member of Ward Road Methodist Church.

After moving he became a choir member and circuit steward for Hartford Methodist Church, Northwich.

Dr Robertson, who was 69, leaves a wife, two daughters, four grandchildren, a sister, and father who is now 102.
