The demolition of a pair of Dundee multi-storey blocks will come a step closer next week.
Councillors will be asked to approve a tender from Safedem to bring down the Derby Street multis at a total cost of £2.4 million. The 22-storey buildings have 374 flats and are the tallest buildings in the city.
Housing convener Jimmy Black said: ”The massive amount of money that was required to bring the flats in the Derby Street multis up to the Scottish Housing Quality Standard was beyond economic reach, and therefore demolition was the next best option.
”New homes have been found for the multis’ tenants and work is going on to rehouse the residents of the sheltered housing blocks at Russell Place.”
Work is scheduled to start on Butterburn and Bucklemaker Court in August with the contract taking a year to complete. It will also see the demolition of car parks and the medium-rise houses at the adjacent 1-56 Russell Place.
A council report says: ”Removal of vacant and derelict buildings will provide an opportunity to enhance the local environment through ongoing regeneration.
”Demolition material will be re-used and recycled where possible, maximising economic opportunities arising from the waste.”
