“Forget Memphis – Dalgety Bay is the new home of music,” said Big Country guitarist Bruce Watson after Saturday’s headline slot at the PKD Festival.
The weather in Memphis might have been more favourable than in the Fife coastal town but the dedication of those who braved the elements was second to none.
The poor forecast looked like it would be another blow for the organisers of the sixth PKD Festival, after the pushkart derby had earlier been cancelled due to a dangerous road surface, but they – like the fans – simply took it all in their stride.
The festival got under way with an impressive motorbike procession to the St David’s Business Park which was turned into a festival venue with stage, stalls and a children’s area with a bouncy castle and water slide.
The PKD Festival was also raising money for Cash for Kids and the hardy souls who braved the rain dug deep throughout the day as they enjoyed the music.
The festival featured 14 acts and despite the rain there was a healthy turnout which continued to build during the afternoon’s festivities.
Neil Diamond tribute act Tam Scott worked through the American singer’s back catalogue before leading the crowd in a mass singalong of Sweet Caroline.
Baby Isaac, Sir David Mutch, The Session and Blue Delta all impressed on the main stage before Fife rockers Big Country’s appearance just after 7.30pm.
“I never thought I’d say this, but hello Dalgety Bay,” said Watson as the band kicked off with Harvest Home from their 1983 platinum album The Crossing.
The band played hits largely from their first three albums and lead singer Simon Hough impressed after recently taking over from Mike Peters on vocals.
Set highlights included Where the Rose is Sown, Restless Natives, Chance, In a Big Country and Fields of Fire which sent the crowd home happy.
A spokesman for the organising committee thanked everyone who made the day possible especially those who braved the rain to raise money for Cash for Kids.
“Roll on next year and we promise it will be even bigger and better,” he added.
