Tesco store work sparks rumours

Tesco store work sparks rumours

A former Kirkcaldy supermarket is not scheduled to reopen after speculation in the town.

Workmen have been spotted in the former Tesco superstore, eight months after it closed its doors to shoppers.

Excitement had mounted over the prospect of a new retailer taking over the Hunter Street site, but The Courier has been told the store is being restored to its original layout in a bid to attract potential tenants.

Bill Harvey, manager of town centre group Kirkcaldy4All, said: “The store is being renovated to the way it was before Tesco first moved.

“That’s what is going on and that was always going to be part of the procedure for when they moved out. The contractors will probably be on site until the middle of the month.”

The supermarket closed its doors in April with the loss of 189 jobs.

The decision was taken by the retail giant as part of a swathe of cuts to its business and its need to close unprofitable stores.

Despite the intervention of then MP Gordon Brown and a huge public campaign, Tesco refused to reconsider its decision and the tills stopped ringing on April 4.

Since then the future of the site has remained a mystery and despite rumours a continental supermarket was interested in the unit, there remains no indication of any company taking over the tenancy.

The closure of Tesco has had a huge impact on the town centre, with the adjacent car park now virtually deserted, while passenger numbers for the bus station have dropped by 18%.
