Drunk driver eight times over the limit avoids prison sentence

A Fife woman who was eight times over the drink-drive limit has avoided a jail sentence.

Irene Hopkins, 52, of Ordnance Road, Crombie, committed the offence just months after she was found slumped behind the wheel of her car near a school more than four times over the limit.

On that occasion, Hopkins was so drunk she had to be carried out of her vehicle into an ambulance. Two woman had taken the keys from her car and police arrived to find Hopkins rambling incoherently.

She kept her licence at that time as she did not plead guilty to the offence until last month, when she was due to go on trial.

In the meantime, she had been seen colliding with another vehicle as she tried to park outside a supermarket. This time Hopkins was found to be eight times over the limit.

She admitted that on June 17 last year on Farm Road, Crombie, she drove a car having consumed excess alcohol. Her reading was 95 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, the legal limit being 22 microgrammes.

She had previously admitted that on January 22 at Halbeath Retail Park, Dunfermline, she drove having consumed excess alcohol. Her reading was 175 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

Solicitor Ian Beatson said his client had post traumatic stress disorder, financial difficulties and suffered from depression which caused her to drink.

He said she would be able to carry out a community payback order as long as she abstained from alcohol.

Sheriff Eric Brown imposed a community payback order with 300 hours of unpaid work, three years supervision and disqualified her for four years.
