Courier Referendum Roadshow: Yes tops poll in Stirling

One of the early visitors to the Courier Referendum Roadshow in Stirling was Graeme Butchart.

The 22-year-old said he would be voting yes come September, adding he was a recent convert.

“If we get independence I am not saying it will be perfect, but the current system doesn’t work. People should not assume we will be perpetually run by an SNP government.”

Andy Cross from Bannockburn was another yes voter, although he said he didn’t agree with all SNP policies, in particular with regard to Europe and the power it could wield over an independent Scotland.

Pensioner Sam Haddow from Auchtermuchty will be voting no in the referendum and was worried about the lack of information about what the impact might be on his pension.

“I don’t think that Scotland will be able to raise enough taxes to support itself,” he said.

The Courier poll in Stirling recorded 59% for a yes vote and 41% intending to vote no.

The roadshow moved on from Stirling to Bridge of Allan where torrential rain hampered voting for a while.

The no campaign narrowly took the afternoon’s poll, 51% to 49%.
