Charlotte and Stephanie have designs on Ryder Cup success

Two girls from Courier Country have won a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to design official Ryder Cup merchandise for this year’s golf clash.

Charlotte Young and Stephanie Kidd, both 12, entered a Courier competition, which asked them to play their part in promoting the event with the possibility their artwork could be beamed across the world.

Their designs went through an exhaustive judging process and caught the eye of European team captain Paul McGinley.

Charlotte, a pupil at Invergowrie Primary School, and Stephanie, of Monifieth High, will work with Glenmuir Ltd, the official clothing manufacturer of the European team, to get their designs into production.

The pupils’ designs Charlotte’s polo shirt and Stephanie’s baseball cap will be manufactured and sold during the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles in September.

McGinley said of the shirt design: “It caught my eye because of the predominance of European blue in the main body of the shirt as well as a hint of the gold of the stars on the European flag, where Gleneagles and Scotland have also been highlighted.”

On Charlotte’s baseball cap design, he said: “I liked the classic simplicity of it as well as the gentle nod towards Scotland with the hint of the saltire on the peak. I think its light-blue colour would also sit well with the dark blue of the shirt winner.”

All profits from the sales will be donated to the Ryder Cup’s official charities. Entries came through the Ryder Cup education resource and The Courier and were open to all schoolchildren in Scotland who met the age criteria.

The youngsters will work with Ann Miller, design and buying director at Glenmuir, to get the designs into production.
