Well plaid Perth sporran maker bags Glasgow 2014 tartan rights

Perth sporran maker Marcus Eagleton has been given the exclusive rights to use the official tartan of the Commonwealth Games in his designs.

Mr Eagleton turns everyday items including comic books and soft drink cans into items of traditional Scottish dress.

He has so far used the distinctive games plaid to create a sporran, purse and satchel, with the accessories being viewed online more than 16,000 times in five days.

Mr Eagleton, who runs Scottish Sporrans in Perth, told The Courier: “I asked for permission to use the tartan and was told by the Glasgow 2014 team that they’d be honoured.

“I’m now planning to send some sporrans down to the games base and hopefully they will be worn by some of the athletes.

“I’ve had a lot of interest in my designs as people seem to be behind Scotland hosting the Games.”

The tartan was designed by 15-year-old Shawlands Academy pupil Aamir Mehmood as part of a competition involving 300 Scottish schools.

It is thought the plaid, which incorporates blue, yellow, white and red on a green background, will be seen by more than a billion people over the course of the Glasgow games.
