Former Dundee FC centre forward George Merchant

George Merchant, a centre forward for Dundee FC in the 1950s, has died aged 89.

Born and raised in Dundee, he attended Rockwell School.

He played for junior teams Elmwood and Stobswell before he was signed as a defender by Third Lanark and then Aberdeen.

George married Nan, a nurse at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, in 1952 and they had three children, Allyson, Graeme and Neil.

Dundee manager George Anderson signed George in 1951 and he moved him into the attack, with the new number nine quickly becoming a fans’ favourite at Dens Park.

He went on to play for Falkirk, scoring a goal as the Bairns beat Kilmarnock to win the Scottish Cup in 1957.

He hung up his boots in 1958 and had a brief spell as a coach at Dunfermline before working for a printing company in Aberdeen.

The family moved back to the Dundee area and George started his own printing company in Broughty Ferry in the mid-1970s. He retired, aged 70, in 1996.

Latterly the couple lived in Carnoustie.

Mr Merchant is survived by his wife and children, 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
