A 52-year-old woman was reported to the procurator fiscal in April in connection with alleged embezzlement at Letham Post Office, it has emerged.
The Rannoch Road branch closed in December 2012 for an “internal audit” and it is understood the alleged offences occurred between 2008 and 2012.
A police spokeswoman said: “Tayside Division can confirm that a 52-year-old woman was charged and a report submitted to the procurator fiscal.”
A Crown Office spokesman added: “The procurator fiscal in Perth has received a report concerning a 52-year-old woman, in connection with alleged incidents takingplace between 2008 and 2012. The report is currently under the consideration of the procurator fiscal.”
The Post Office declined to comment on the case but a spokesman said: “What we can say is that the overwhelming majority of people who work in our branch network are professional, honest and provide the highest standards of service possible, and so any breach of the trust placed in them by individuals, communities and the Post Office Ltd is treated very seriously.”
An application to change the Letham branch into a chip shop was lodged with Perth and Kinross Council.
However, the Post Office insisted that it is “committed to providing a Post Office service in Letham”.
