Man who threatened police jailed over television bust-up

A television viewer punched the screen in a rage before going on a knife rampage and threatening to stab police because his ex-partner turned down the volume.

William Potter smashed the TV set and repeatedly kicked and stabbed the front door of his home because the noisy programme he was watching had been interrupted.

Perth Sheriff Court was told Potter had been in a relationship with Jenna Whyte for around a decade but the couple had split, although they were still sharing a home.

Depute fiscal Jim Eodanable said Ms Whyte had been out all day and came home and went to bed while Potter, who had been drinking, stayed to watch television.

“He turned the volume of the TV up which was a nuisance to the rest of the household,” Mr Eodanable said.

The court was told that a mobile phone was also hurled against a wall before Potter marched off to the kitchen before returning with a knife.

Potter stabbed the door three times with the knife and cut his hand on it and he was bleeding by the time police were called to the scene by his former partner.

Potter, 29, Firbank Road, Perth, admitted behaving in a threatening manner by punching and smashing a TV screen, punching and kicking doors, breaking a mobile phone, stabbing a door with a knife and threatening to stab police and “everyone else.”

The incident took place on August 30.

Solicitor Pauline Cullerton, defending, said: “He does have issues with alcohol and anger management. He fully accepts responsibility for what happened.”

Sheriff Lindsay Foulis jailed Potter for seven months.
