Taxi driver robbed after pick-up

A Fife taxi driver was assaulted and robbed in daylight on Tuesday evening after giving four teenagers a lift back to Glenrothes from T in the Park.

Chris Clayton, who drives with Glenrothes-based Z-Cabs, had taken the call to pick up the four men in Milnathort.

However, when he got the £30 fare back to Aboyne Way in Glenrothes at around 7pm on Tuesday, he was assaulted by the men, thought to be in their late teens and had a quantity of money stolen.

A spokesperson for Z-Cabs told The Courier Mr Clayton had been punched in the back of the head and had tried to fight his attackers off.

He had chased his attackers down the street but they got away with his takings.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “By their appearance, the four were probably at T in the Park over the weekend as they were wearing T in the Park lanyards.”

A taxi driver from another Glenrothes firm, who asked not to be named, told The Courier he turned down an anonymous call to take a fare from Milnathort to Glenrothes just hours before the assault.

The man, who was robbed of £65 in a separate taxi incident in Glenrothes on Monday, said: “I got a call about teatime from someone saying they wanted a run back to Glenrothes from T in the Park.

“But I wouldn’t take the fare because it was a withheld number and they wouldn’t give me a mobile number. I thought it was a hoax.

“Sounds like I might have had a lucky escape.”

Anyone with information should contact Police Scotland on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
