Scotland has been warned to expect heavy rain throughout the day with some snow expected on higher ground.
The Met Office has issued yellow “be aware” warnings for much of west, central and northern Scotland covering Skye, Argyll, Strathclyde and Tayside.
Forecasters said heavy rain started to fall in the Western Isles last night, turning to snow as temperatures fell. The wet weather is expected to last until Saturday morning.
Brendan Jones, a forecaster with Meteogroup, said: “It seems like spring has been put on hold as around 6cms (2.4ins) of rain is expected to fall in the west and central areas tomorrow.
“It could cause some localised flooding but there has been an extended dry spell in the west and north recently and a number of wild fires so ground won’t be heavily saturated at the moment.
“Most of the country will experience some rain tomorrow and the mountains and some islands could see snow which started to fall in the Western Isles last night.
“By Saturday some lighter showers will remain but conditions will be generally clearer and the further south you go in Scotland the more likely there will be sunshine which will eventually travel north.”
