Oscar-winning actor Jon Voight has accused Donald Trump’s critics of “evildoing” against the president.

Voight, who earlier this month was honoured with a prestigious national award for the arts by Mr Trump, said “liberals” have “much hate with evil intent to destroy” the current occupant of the White House.

The 80-year-old thanked the president for “your greatness, your kindness, your wiseness”, as well as a ” love for the arts, for the heroes, for the American people”.

Voight, whose daughter is the Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie, delivered the message via a video on Twitter to mark the US holiday of Thanksgiving.

“Differences are part of life,” said Voight, the star of films including Midnight Cowboy,  Deliverance and Heat.

“All have free will, but when differences become evil and want to destroy, this is not what He wants of us. We are made of love. And we all have the same desire, as I’ve said before; to love, give love, be love.

“Can this nation have love, can this nation understand differences without destroying another?

“A mother, a father, teach their children what they learn. Some have learned by books, some have just learned because their parents learned from their parents, the rules, the truths, the untruths.”

Voight, who won the best actor Academy Award  for his role in 1978 drama Coming Home, added: “What is truth? He is the only truth that guides with no evil intent. One God. These liberals have much hate with evil intent to destroy a president who has taken on this nation’s safety with perfect eyes. Yes, eyes of our God’s liberty.

“Let us gift this unity of the United States of America, let us lift the darkness, upon this evil, this evildoing against President Trump.

“My fellow Americans of the United States of America, I’m proud to be American. I was honoured a great medal of arts from the White House, from President Trump, and an honour it was.

“Thank you President Trump, for your greatness, your kindness, your wiseness and love for the arts, for the heroes, for the American people.

“My wish would be for all to know you like I do, a man of integrity and trust and safety, for this noble label, the President of the United States of America.”

Voight was awarded the National Medal of Arts at the White House on November 21.

He is one of the few Hollywood stars to publicly back the president, who is usually met with hostility by leading figures in the entertainment industry.
