Man’s best friend? He even licks the dishes

The bond between pets and their woners is becoming closer.
The bond between pets and their woners is becoming closer.

The line between good and bad habits can “become blurred” with nearly half of the nation’s pet lovers letting their dog lick the dishes.

Meanwhile, 3% confess to sharing a toothbrush with their pooch.

And those were not the only shocking statistics revealed in the study carried out by a pet products firm.

It seems dogs really are man’s best friend so much so the latter is quite prepared to let the former get away with some questionable behaviour.

Among those surveyed, 25% said their dogs will eat poo and vomit, 20% have caught them eating food out of the bin and 7% of pet dogs drink from the toilet despite all of this 80% of owners would still let their dog lick their face.

Meanwhile, 33% of cat owners say that their pet brings other animals into the home, yet 14% will drink out of the same cup as their feline friends.

Meanwhile, one third will kiss their cat on the lips.

A spokesman for Rosewood Pet Products said half of parents allow their children to pick up their pet’s toys and 7% of those youngsters also put the toys in their mouths.

TV vet Marc Abraham claimed the findings actually serve to “fully demonstrate” the close bond that humans enjoy with their pets. He even suggested some of the surprising habits revealed in the survey could have a positive impact on young family members.

“Our furry friends are an integral part of the family, so naturally we like to share as much of our lives with them as possible,” Marc said.

“In my opinion, providing your pet’s teeth and toys are cleaned regularly, children growing up around pets will develop stronger immune systems.

“They will also learn about important life skills including responsibility, compassion and empathy.”

Beverley Panter, director at Rosewood Pet Products, said: “The findings do suggest that the line between good and bad habits can become blurred.”
