Independence referendum: “The Courier Debates” is coming your way

Tonight is the night. The first Courier Debates the independence referendum. We’re kick starting at Dundee’s Gardyne Theatre and I’m delighted to tell you it’s a sell-out!

I say “sell out”, all seat reservations are free but you catch my drift. If you’re one of the lucky 300 heading along to the east of the city today then you’re in for a treat.

Our panel in alphabetical order, Mark Diffley of Ipsos Mori, SNP Treasury spokesman Stewart Hosie and Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie will be sure to provide an engaging discussion about the biggest decision Scotland has faced in 300 years.

As important as what our politicians and impartial expert say is the fact that all questions heading their way are coming from our audience.

This is about finding out what’s occupying your minds when it comes to the debate as a whole and allowing representatives to address your concerns.

If you haven’t grabbed a ticket, fear not. We’ll be covering the debate live right here, with full coverage in Friday’s paper.

It’s not just Dundee that we’re visiting, though. In the spirit of Local Matters, we will be bringing our debates to Angus, Perth and Fife over the coming weeks.

Next Thursday will see Professor John Curtice, Jim Fairlie of Farmers for Yes and North East Scotland Conservative MSP Alex Johnstone in Arbroath.

The following week will see Yes Scotland chief executive Blair Jenkins join the panel alongside referendum expert Matt Qvortrup and Mid Scotland and Fife Tory representative Liz Smith.

Finally, we wrap up in Dunfermline with a cracker. On the panel is Yes Scotland chairman Dennis Canavan, Professor Curtice and local Labour MP Thomas Docherty.

I’d sign up for your local event now if I were you, given how fast seats for our first debate were snapped up!

See you on the road
