Driving back from Kilmarnock on Saturday, I was wracking my brains trying to think when I had last seen a Dundee team play as well as Paul Hartley’s side did at Rugby Park.
Eventually, I had to admit defeat and simply accept that this was the best display I had witnessed from the Dark Blues in recent years.
They were absolutely outstanding from start to finish with a performance right out of the top drawer.
Killie simply had no answer to Dundee’s pace, energy and clever movement.
Skipper Kevin Thomson and fellow midfielder Gary Harkins were a delight to watch while Kane Hemmings, Rory Loy and Greg Stewart were a constant threat with the latter looking even better than he did last season.
I was also impressed by former Inverness midfielder Nick Ross as well as full-back Kevin Holt on a day when just about everything went right for the Dark Blues.
The travelling fans were understandably ecstatic at the final whistle after watching such a dominant display from Hartley’s new-look side but and this is a big but it also has to be remembered just how poor Kilmarnock were.
Home boss Gary Locke publicly apologised to their fans saying, the game was a “disaster” for them and on this evidence, Killie will be lucky to avoid relegation.
There are undoubtedly tougher tests ahead for Dundee however, the signs on this opening-day display could not be more promising and it just might be a season to savour for those of a Dark Blue disposition.
