Just political posturing

Sir, – I see Murdo Fraser MSP is calling on the Scottish Government to put in place funding to roll out superfast broadband (Courier, April 2).

In his comments Mr Fraser fails to point out two things. First, the Scottish Government is in fact taking steps to roll out superfast broadband. And second, Mr Fraser voted against my recent budget that included targeted measures to increase funding for this purpose.

This represents political posturing of the worst kind from Mr Fraser, repeatedly calling for action on a specific issue and then voting against a budget which contains the very measures he was demanding.

Host of golden daffodils

Sir, – I recently visited Dundee, unfortunately for the purpose of attending a family funeral, however my heart was lifted when confronted by the most glorious display of daffodils I have ever seen.

The Kingsway and Arbroath Road were a blaze of yellow and I felt the parks department should be praised for making Dundee the spring flower capital of the UK.

I travel widely throughout the country and live now in Northamptonshire and have never come across such a beautiful and dazzling sight.

I was born in Dundee but have not lived there for over 30 years and although I understand it was a Mr Gordon Dow who was the inspiration for your floral abundance 25 years ago, I can only assume that other visits home have never been at a time when your horticultural wonders were in bloom.

Well done Dundee it certainly cheered me up when it was needed and sometimes it takes a visitor to make you appreciate what you have.

This is crazy

Sir, – An illegal immigrant convicted of possessing false identity documents is set to win damages after judges ruled he was unlawfully detained by immigration authorities trying to deport him (Damages payout, In brief, Courier, April 3).

Has this country gone stark, staring mad? Somebody enters this country illegally, breaks the law, we keep him in custody while due process of law is followed and we end up paying him compensation!

We must be the only nation in the world daft enough to put up with all this nonsense.

No loopholes?

Sir, – An illegal immigrant, possessing false ID documents expects to be awarded damages for being ‘unlawfully’ detained, prior to deportation!

It depresses me that supposedly learned judges can never find loopholes in the law to favour the crown prosecutors.

We do not have the money for this stupidity.
