Danny Grainger off on the right foot for St Johnstone

St Johnstone are headed into the new season without a natural left-back as cover for Danny Grainger.

But the man himself insists that won’t make him complacent.

Grainger lost his place at Dundee United to Paul Dixon after, by his own admission, taking first-team involvement for granted.

Despite a fine first campaign with Saints last year, he’s not going to make the same mistake.

“Nobody is guaranteed a place at this club-myself included,” he said.

“We may not have another out and out left-back in the squad but Steven Anderson, Dave Mackay and Liam Craig can all slot in there. So I can’t rest on my laurels.

“I’ve been in this situation before.

“At Dundee United I was told by the manager I was his first choice left-back, took my foot off the gas and got punished for it.

“That won’t happen this time.

“I work hard every day in training here looking to improve.”

Grainger is relishing the big kick-off, which for Saints takes the form of a trip to the capital.

“We’ve had plenty of games to get fit,” he said. “Now it’s time to get down to business.

“Pre-season matches serve their purpose but everyone prefers the competitive stuff.

“And to be starting off at Tynecastle is ideal.

“When the fixtures come out, after Ibrox and Parkhead, Hearts away is the next one you look for.

“Tynecastle is just a great football stadium.

“The fans are so close to the pitch and the atmosphere there is amazing.

“And with Jim Jefferies back in charge the Hearts fans will be anticipating a new era which should guarantee a big turnout this weekend.”
