No butties about it United are frying

Dundee United manager Peter Houston believes his players’ appetite for success has been fed by eating bacon rolls.

There can be no ifs or butties about it the Tangerines have been in fantastic form.

Indeed, Houston feels it would not be telling porkies to claim that a change to their normal breakfast routine has worked wonders for the team.

Having had so many important matches in succession securing three fantastic wins over Rangers, Motherwell and Hibs in just over a week Houston is mindful that rest is as important as work.

After he and his coaches decided it was time to give his players a well-earned break from their training regime, off they went for a stroll along the city’s Broughty Ferry beach before sitting down to eat in a local restaurant.

“The fact we have had such a busy schedule lately I felt it would be good for the lads to get a wee stretch and a bit of fresh air into their lungs,” said the Tannadice boss.

“We have had so many hard games they don’t need intensive training all the time.

“So we took them down to Broughty Ferry, had them walk along the beach for a wee while then ended up in a cafe for some bacon rolls.

“Things like that are great for team spirit. We all sat together and had a bit of banter.

“I think it was the right thing to do because you don’t need to batter players all the time to get the best out of them.

“At this stage it is important to give them time to recover from the games, whether it is in the gym or a wee recovery session in the swimming pool.

“It is all about striking a balance so myself, Paul Hegarty and Gary Kirk got our heads together and decided a wee walk and a bacon roll was the best idea.

“It was great for everyone to have a blether.

“There are no cliques and no superstars here. They work hard for each other and you see that on the park.

“The spirit here is brilliant and by beating Rangers, Motherwell and now Hibs the confidence is high.

“Winning games breeds confidence and the banter that is going back and forth between the boys is great.

“Everyone is on a high so we are looking to keep that going in the weeks that are left until the end of the season.”
