Cowdenbeath 3 Airdrie 0: Surging Cowden eye up play-off places

Greig Spence: passed his target of 10 goals.

Cowdenbeath stretched their unbeaten home run to seven games with an emphatic League One victory over Airdrie.

Victories over Albion Rovers and Ayr United in the space of five days over the festive period would really strengthen their hopes of making the promotion play-offs.

Top scorer Greig Spence added another two to his tally taking him to 11 this term and the former Raith Rovers frontman feels that the team need to press on now and take advantage of their two home games against the promotion contenders coming up.

Cowden had to defend well in the first period with Airdrie, taking advantage of the gale-force wind, pressing for long spells but on the interval whistle Spence headed his team in front.

On the hour Gordon Smith set up midfielder Andy Murdoch and his 25-yard rocket doubled the lead. When Spence latched on to a David van Zanten mistake in 71 minutes to slot home the third, the game was over.

Spence was delighted to get into double figures so quickly.

He said: “I set myself a target of 10 goals at the start of the season and to reach it before the end of the year is really encouraging.

“But it is testament to the way the lads are playing and the chances that they are creating.

“We now have the opportunity to take on two top-four sides within a few days at home and if we can win them then it would put us in a great position.”

Player/boss Colin Nish agreed and said: “I felt that we defended well against the strong wind in the first half and to grab an excellently taken goal on the interval whistle gave us the momentum to go on and take the game by the scruff of the neck in the second period.

“It was another good home performance and we want to keep that going against Albion Rovers and Ayr United.”
