Gary Naysmith claimed the artificial Galabank surface leaves a lot to be desired.
The Fifers have found it tough going on plastic pitches this campaign, having slipped to defeat at East Stirlingshire.
But although the gaffer said he didn’t have a problem with artificial surfaces generally, he claimed the Annan pitch contributed to his side’s downfall.
He said: “Annan worked very hard and deserved their win on a surface that they’re used to.
“I don’t want to look for excuses but it’s not for me, that surface.
“I don’t mean plastic pitches in general, just that one.
“The amount of players slipping wasn’t right.
“You have other pitches but that one isn’t at the same standard.
“But Annan created more chances than we did, have a great home record and you need to be at your very best to get something from here. We weren’t.”
The home side started impressively and took the early part of the game to the Fifers.
Josh Todd and Peter Weatherston both pulled good saves out of Ryan Goodfellow with just a few minutes on the clock.
The game was flowing from end to end and Kevin Smith should have done better when he found himself free inside the box only to drag his effort wide.
After a ropey start the visitors settled well and dominated across the park.
The hosts were defending in numbers and making it difficult for the Fifers to find talisman Nathan Austin.
Jonathan Page managed to get a clear sight of goal but he got under his effort from eight yards and cleared the bar.
The game got bogged down in the middle of the park before the home side grabbed the lead out of nowhere.
The Fifers lost possession on the edge of the Annan box from their own corner.
Smart Osadolor broke up the park as East Fife scrambled bodies back.
It was to no avail as Osadolor found Todd, who netted.
They were unlucky not to double their advantage early in the second half when Weatherston burst in on the East Fife goal and crashed an effort off the bar.
The Fifers had large spells of possession.
However, despite being well on top, they were unable to convert their dominance into goals.
With East Fife going for broke and pushing centre half Jonathan Page up front, Rabin Omar took advantage of a gap in the visiting defence and sealed the win.
