Brechin boss Ray McKinnon praises players after he’s named manager of the month

Brechin boss Ray McKinnon insists his players deserve all the credit after he was named League One Manager of the Month for February.

It is the second month in succession that the Glebe gaffer has picked up the accolade with his side currently on an incredible unbeaten league run which was extended to 16 games following Tuesday night’s home draw with Dunfermline.

McKinnon admitted that the recent gruelling schedule of midweek and Saturday games had started to take its toll on his squad of part-timers and he is looking forward to his players having a bit of a break next week.

However, before that, there is the important business of facing Airdrie this afternoon as City look to continue their promotion push.

The manager said: “I am absolutely delighted to be given the accolade for the second month running but once again, it is the players who deserve all the credit.

“They have been nothing short of exceptional.

“Saturday’s match against Airdrie will be their fifth in 14 days and many of them have been playing through the pain barrier.

“The schedule is really starting to take its toll. My entire back four sat out training on Thursday night along with Alan Trouten and Tiger Molloy.

“To be honest, training consisted of little more than a warm-up and then a warm-down.

“We really had to wrap the players in cotton wool.

“So after the Airdrie game, it will be great just to have a full week’s training for the lads to recharge their batteries before next Saturday’s match in Peterhead.

“Before that break though we are fully focused on the Airdrie match.

“The last two matches between us have been tight but I felt we should have beaten Dunfermline on Tuesday night so we will be going all out for three points and to keep our great run going.”

Meanwhile, McKinnon is still trying to bring Aberdeen’s Jamie Masson in on loan but he faces a race against time to do that before this afternoon’s game.
