Raith boss Ray McKinnon insists there is still plenty to play for

Raith boss Ray McKinnon insists it is far too early in the season to suggest that his side are already just left fighting for fourth spot in the Championship table.

Rovers currently sit in fifth place, one point ahead of Queen of the South and one behind Morton.

There is then a big eight-point gap to Falkirk in third who sit four behind Hibs.

However, McKinnon, whose side travel to face Dumbarton tomorrow, is certain that Rovers can claw their way up the table and their ambitions lie higher than just the fourth play-off position.

The manager said: “I know there’s a gap but I don’t think there’s much between us, Hibs and Falkirk.

“I know both of them have beaten us twice, but they’ve been very tight games and, to be fair, we should have taken something out of the four matches.

“There’s not much between us but they’ve gone on unbelievable runs. Hibs are 13 wins from 14 and I’ve watched three games, including against us and Falkirk, and they could have had zero out of nine.

“So, there’s not much between us. I just think we need to be a bit more clinical in front of goal and make sure we take our chances when they come.

“I think that could be the difference this season.

“We wouldn’t want the gap to widen any. We want to make it as competitive as possible.

“We don’t want to let the three above us get away and then have a middle league table.

“We’ll be chasing them down as hard as we can, definitely.

“Hopefully we can go and get a result on Saturday, which I think we’re more than capable of doing if we play well and get kick-started again.”

The game against Dumbarton is the first of three in a week for Rovers who face St Mirren on Tuesday night in the league and then Elgin City next weekend in the Scottish Cup.

And McKinnon admits he will have to shuffle his pack to cope with the hectic schedule.

He added: “I am going to use the squad and rotate it. Hopefully we get the result on Saturday that will allow me to rotate it a wee bit for Tuesday, and then we’ll do it again for Saturday.

“It’s impossible to play the same team three times in a week and get the same performance.

“We have a good squad and we will look to freshen it up where we best see fit.”

Meanwhile, Raith skipper Jason Thomson is rated no better than 50-50 for the game with the Sons as he is still trying to overcome a back problem.

McKinnon added: “Jason’s struggling, still, and Craig Barr is out.

“Jason has a tear in his back. It’s a wee bit worse than they thought.

“I’ve spoken to the physio and they’re pretty certain it’s a tear, and it is improving.

“But he’s suffering when he’s twisting and turning.

“So, he’s doubtful for the Dumbarton game he’s 50-50.”
