Montrose have a crossroads match against East Stirlingshire today, and manager Paul Hegarty wants to make sure his players take the right turning.
There is currently a gap of five points between themselves and the division’s basement side.
And plumping up the cushion to eight sounds a lot better than seeing it shrink to two.
“We don’t want to go through the same scenario as last season,” Hegarty said.
“We only ended up staying in the division by the skin of our teeth.
“I’ve told the players the seriousness of the situation – the ones who remember it from last season and the ones who weren’t at the club.
“We can make things a lot easier for ourselves by getting out of this situation immediately.”
Montrose have been consistently inconsistent this season, with their season being summed up by a win against the league leaders one week and defeat to the second bottom side the next.
“We’re not alone,” he said. “I’ve spoken to other managers and none of us seem to be sure what’s going to happen in this league.
“We were nothing like the same team that beat Elgin.
“We’ve prepared them well and hopefully the right pros will turn up this week.”
Graham Webster should return from a groin injury, and on-loan keeper Alex Tokarczyk could also be available.
