Sandaza praises St Johnstone strike pairing

Striker Fran Sandaza believes his partnership with Cillian Sheridan is probably the best he has forged in his career.

Now he is hoping that it is not split up in three months’ time. The duo have got 10 goals between them already and have fast become one of the most potent frontlines in the country.

The Spaniard is under contract until the end of the season but the Irishman is only in Perth on a six-month loan from Bulgaria.

So, as it stands he will be heading out of McDiarmid Park at the end of the year.

Sandaza said: “When I spoke to the gaffer to sign here he said he wanted a partnership up front.

“It would be bad if Cillian had to go away after Christmas but this is football. Maybe he will go back to Sofia. Maybe the gaffer won’t be here. Who knows what will happen?

“When I was at United and scoring goals everyone was saying I would be moving to a bigger club. But nothing happened.

“As a footballer you are better living day to day. If you think too much about the future you are not concentrating on the present.”

Most of the successful forward pairings over the years have comprised two strikers with different styles that complement each other.

According to Sandaza, however, the key to the Saints combination is their footballing likeness.

The former United man said: “We have a good understanding out on the pitch. There are already 10 goals between us – 11 if you count my goal against Livingston which I wasn’t given.

“We are similar styles but we both have an eye for the goal and that is good for the team.

“Sometimes you can be good players but if you don’t complement each other it can be difficult. It is very important to have a partnership.

“I have played with many good players but this could be my best ever partnership.

“Everything is working well but we might even get better. But I am happy with the way it is going right now. I played with Jon Daly at Dundee United. He is a goalscorer who is very good in the air and in the box.”Davidson/WrightMeanwhile, Saints boss Derek McInnes reported Murray Davidson and Frazer Wright both still have a chance of making their comebacks from injury against Inverness Caledonian Thistle at the weekend.

Wright was given 20 minutes of a bounce game on Friday but Davidson was not included.

McInnes has yet to decide whether one or both will figure in another closed-doors match this week.

He said: “They’ve both trained all last week and again today. I’ll need to weigh up whether they would benefit more from getting other sessions under their belt or from a game.

“Neither of them have been ruled out for Saturday. The only ones who have are Sam Parkin and Sean Higgins.”

David Robertson is a “major doubt” because of a hamstring injury he picked up in Saints’ last match at Kilmarnock.

Carl Finnigan, Callum Davidson, Willie Gibson, Marcus Haber and Jamie Adams were all given the full 90 minutes on Friday. Finnigan scored in the match.

McInnes has dismissed a report that French midfielder Jimmy Juan will be training with Saints this week and playing in the bounce match as a trialist. He is a free agent after his club, Grenoble, went bust.
