Gary Harkins believes beating the team who have taken the Premiership by storm can give Dundee a massive boost.
The Dark Blues scored through David Clarkson and Greg Stewart in a four-minute spell in the second period to beat league-leading Hamilton Accies 2-0 on Saturday.
The victory was Dundee’s first home league success of the season and it brought to an end the visitors’ 11-game unbeaten run.
Harkins, who claimed assists for both goals, said: “That’s our first home (league) win and I hope we kick on from here.
“Hamilton are top of the league on merit and I watched them against Aberdeen the other week and they were really good.
“So it’s a great result for us. It was a tough game but we got the three points. It’s a result that should give us a lot of confidence.”
Harkins had a hand in both goals, firstly firing over the corner that Clarkson headed home on 69 minutes then nodding the ball into the path of Stewart for the second just four minutes later.
It was a quick one-two from which Hamilton never recovered.
Harkins enjoyed his role in proceedings as it meant he was able to shut up the away supporters who were giving him stick and repay the faith shown in him by boss Paul Hartley.
He said: “I got two attempts at that corner for the first goal and Clarky is in flames at the moment. It was a great header.
“I got a flick-on for the second and it was a great finish by Greg. He had a lot of time and could have panicked but he put it away well.”
He was informed of praise for him from Hartley, who had earlier said: “When he plays we play.”
Harkins was understandably delighted with that, saying: “That’s a big pat on the back from the manager and it’s nice to hear.
“The trust is something I feed off. When your manager has that kind of confidence in you, it helps you go out and play better every week.”
