Dundee veteran Gavin Rae linked with Montrose job

Dundee legend Gavin Rae could be in line to become the new manager of Montrose, Courier Sport can reveal.

The Links Park club are considering their options in the wake of Stuart Garden’s departure at the start of the week.

The former Rangers and Scotland veteran’s career is coming towards an end, and just last week he said that he would decide his future plans in the summer.

Rae already has his coaching badges and has been helping out on that front in his third spell with the Dark Blues.

If he was offered the job and decides that he isn’t yet ready to move to Australia which he has stated will happen one day Montrose could be the perfect first step on the management ladder for the 36-year-old.

Other names in the frame include former players Kevin Tindal and John McGlashan and ex-Brechin City stalwart Charlie King, who is Brechin Vics manager.

Chairman Derek Sim has stated that board members have not yet decided whether to go with an experienced boss or a young up-and-coming one.

It is thought that they have been impressed with the impact Colin Cameron has made as player/manager at fellow League Two side Berwick Rangers, and could be tempted to go for Rae in the hope he could emulate Cameron on the pitch and in the dug-out.

Cameron’s Berwick beat Montrose 5-0 a few weeks ago.

There is a strong connection between Dundee and Montrose, with Ray Farningham returning to Dens from Links Park, and the likes of Martin Boyle, Leighton McIntosh and John Gibson being loaned out to Angus in recent times.

Montrose are in no rush to make an appointment, so Rae could finish the season with title-chasing Dundee. Garden’s assistant George Shields and goalkeeping coach John McCafferty will take the team until a new man is in post.
