Dundee v Forfar: Dark Blues to freshen up

All smiles from Dundee ace Iain Davidson as he awaits the visit of Forfar.

Dundee boss John Brown is set to ring the changes for the Ramsdens Cup tie against Forfar.

The Dark Blues were well below par in the league on Saturday at Dens against a well-organised Alloa outfit.

The game looked certain to end in stalemate but the introduction of subs Martin Boyle, Steven Doris and Jamie Reid revitalised Dundee and they finally managed to secure a victory thanks to a last-gasp Kevin McBride penalty.

Now, all three subs will be in contention for a starting spot against Dick Campbell’s Loons, who knocked Rangers out of the League Cup earlier this month.

Brown said: “It will be the same squad but I intend to freshen things up. The boys who came on are definitely in my thoughts.

“They made the difference that won us the game. Doris, Boyle and Reid came on and they had a freshness about them and a lot of energy.

“They were probably more direct which we never had with our strikers in the first half. You have to give Alloa full credit as they were well organised and hard to break down.

“We never really looked to threaten in behind so we will be looking to rectify it. But we got the result, that was the important thing.

He added: “There are certainly not going to be any easy games. The first two teams we have played are the promoted ones and they are naturally on a high.

“But credit to our boys, they stuck at it. When you are able to win a game when you are not at your best and the fans are on your case…we will take confidence from that and will now welcome Dick and Forfar.

“We didn’t really create a great deal so we want to try and rectify that and get another clean sheet.

“We know it will be a tough game against Forfar though. They will be coming here on the back of a bad result at the weekend but they showed what they could do knocking Rangers out of the League Cup.”

Boyle admitted he is ready to seize his chance if he is handed a start against Forfar.

The former Montrose striker has been used out wide on the right by Brown but the player admitted he is delighted to get game time.

He said: “I have been playing on the right wing but I am just happy to play anywhere for the team, to be on the pitch winning games.

“It is a great feeling. I have never played in that position before but it lets me use my pace. I have had to be patient but it is important to take your chance when it comes along.

“We want to win every competition we enter and the Ramsdens is no different. Rangers are still in it but I think we definitely have a chance.”

Meanwhile, Forfar boss Dick Campbell, who will hand a debut to former Dark Blues favourite Rab Douglas, reckons his side are a target now in cup competitions after their giant-killing act against Rangers.

He said: “Having knocked Rangers out of the Scottish League Cup, everyone will see sending Forfar out of a cup competition as a big result. In some ways it is a nice problem to have but my players will be well warned that Dundee see this as a big game and that we have to play really well if we are to progress.”

The Loons miss Gavin Malin after he picked up a knock in the 2-0 defeat from Ayr at the weekend and Keith Gibson remains out with a knock.

However Iain Campbell and Mark McCulloch return from bans and Darren Dods is free to play despite his sending off at Somerset Park against Ayr at the weekend.
