Dundee United boss Jackie McNamara may have made nine summer signings but he believes some of his new boys bring added value in terms of versatility.
Former Spurs trainee Calum Butcher is a recognised centre-half while ex-Partick Thistle favourite Paul Paton’s normal berth is in midfield.
However, the United manager admitted that he would have no hesitation playing the pair in other roles.
When asked if he felt Butcher could play as holding midfielder, he replied: “Calum has a lot of attributes. He can pass the ball, he is very quick and I think he can play that one as well with Paton.
“We did it when we were away in Spain and he did well. That’s important that we can move players about. Paton is quite versatile as well. He can go to right-back and other positions. So they are good additions.”
United play Inverness on Saturday at home and McNamara admitted he is looking for his side to be a lot harder to beat at Tannadice compared to last season when they only won four times in the league.
He said: “It is important that we make Tannadice a difficult place for teams to come to.
“Last season, we maybe conceded a goal and you could see the confidence sapping a little bit. I think it is important that we all stick together and try to push forward.
“Inverness had a great start against St Mirren but it is important that we do the same this weekend at home.”
