Hamilton 1 Cowdenbeath 0: Blue Brazil miss chance to take a point

Jon Robertson will have recurring nightmares after one of the most incredible misses in front of goal cost the Blue Brazil a share of the spoils.

Cowdenbeath’s hopes of a hat-trick of league wins were shattered on Saturday when they lost by a single goal away to early pace-setters Hamilton,.

In reality the Blue Brazil should have come away with a point after the most remarkable miss in front of goal seven minutes from time by ex-St Mirren man Robertson, a miss which will haunt him for a very long time to come.

Greg Stewart’s shot was brilliantly blocked by Accies goalkeeper Kevin Cuthbert but the ball fell perfectly to Robertson six yards out in front of goal, but somehow he screwed the ball wide.

Cowden boss Colin Cameron, still baffled by Robertson’s miss, said: “It was beyond belief. He will hit that shot another 99 times out of 100 and score every time.”

The Fifers were resolute in defence, restricting Accies to just one effort on goal in the early stages, a 30-yard effort by Ali Crawford which dipped over after 10 minutes.

Cowdenbeath’s first real chance came in 17 minutes when Dean Brent sent lone striker Kane Hemmings away but his low, fierce cross flashed across the face of goal with no takers.

Right on the interval Cowden passed up one of the few chances they carved out in the first period when Crawford was caught in possession by Marc McKenzie, who sent Robertson racing through on the right, but his 15-yard angled drive flew just over.

Accies got what proved to be the winner five minutes after the restart when Crawford opened up the defence, with Jamie Stevenson failing to track Gordon’s run down the right. The defender cut in and rifled the ball high past goalkeeper Grant Adams.

Cameron, added: “For the first 70 minutes we were off the pace and our ball retention wasn’t good enough in the first half.

“When we went a goal down, we changed the formation, got on the front foot and put them under pressure. What we have to do is believe in ourselves a bit more.”
