Rangers v Forfar: Defensive display is not an option for Loons manager

Marvin Andrews, who could be recalled this weekend, challenges Andy Little earlier this season.

Forfar boss Dick Campbell will take his charges to face runaway leaders Rangers but sitting back and soaking up the pressure is certainly not part of his gameplan.

Ally McCoist’s men have won all 13 of their league fixtures so far and will be firm favourites to extend their 100% League One record to 14 games in front of their own fans this evening.

The Loons still have the distinction of being the only club to triumph over the Glasgow giants this season, however, albeit in a League Cup tie at Station Park before the involvement of the Ibrox club’s close season signings.

As the manager tasked with trying to mastermind victory over a team averaging three goals a game so far this term, Campbell told Courier Sport he has no plans to play a rearguard action for 90 minutes.

“Dick Campbell playing defensively?” he said.

“You must be joking. We’re the only team that have beaten them this season and we’ll be going there to try and do it again.

“At the end of the day, we know Rangers will be heavy favourites but I’m quite sure all the Rangers boys know that as well.

“I’m looking forward to it and it’s quite a busy spell of important games we’ve got coming up.

“We’ve got Rangers this midweek, Dunfermline on Saturday, Brechin next Tuesday and Arbroath the following Saturday, so the games are coming thick and fast.

“We know it will be hard against Rangers, they’ve won 13 out of 13 league games so far, and I expected them to do that sort of thing at the start of the season.

“They are full-time and they have got better players than other teams in the league, so I’m not surprised they’ve not lost a game.

“We’re not expected to go there and do anything, but it would be nice if we could give them a shock. There’s no point being apprehensive because it’s a game we should enjoy playing in.”

The Loons might well have some problems to contend with defensively in any case this evening, but they will have the added difficulty of having to alter things slightly at the back due to the absence of Stuart Malcolm.

The defender was shown a straight red card in the 1-1 Scottish Cup draw at Brechin on Saturday and will miss the visit to Ibrox as a result, although the Loons boss admits he has some options at his disposal.

“Malcolm is suspended but big Marvin Andrews will come back into my thoughts for this game, and he did really well when we played them at home in the league not that long ago,” he said.

“He was a tower of strength in that game, although I’ve also got Odmar Fr who can come in and play in defence, so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

“To be honest, I don’t think there will be too many changes from Saturday but I haven’t quite made up my mind yet.”

On-loan Craig Storie will be back available after missing the weekend cup tie at Glebe Park, while defender Mark Baxter, who was also ordered off at the weekend, will be available as he received two yellow cards meaning his ban will be served in the Scottish Cup.

l Forfar’s Scottish Cup replay against Brechin City will be played at Station Park on Tuesday December 10, with a 7.45pm kick-off.

The winners can look forward to a home tie against Premiership St Johnstone in February.
