St Johnstone boss should be back in dugout at Tynecastle

Tommy Wright was absent from St Johnstone’s training yesterday after missing Wednesday night’s draw with Ross County.

But assistant manager Callum Davidson expects the Perth boss to be back in the dugout at Tynecastle tomorrow.

“I got a call from Tommy before 8am so he is on the mend,” Davidson reported. “But he doesn’t want to risk spreading the virus in the dressing room.

“He should be back in his usual place in the dug out on Saturday.

“Remember he picked a team when he was in hospital after gall bladder surgery so the phone call was to be expected.

“There was no live feed of the game with Ross County so that was frustrating for him. We’d joked about sticking an i-pad up in the directors’ box so he could follow the action and shout at the lads from his bed!”

Davidson believes that Saints are starting to look like their old selves again.

“We played well in the first-half but didn’t take our chances to get the second goal,” he said.

“Tommy and I had a look back at recent displays and we have gone back to making the team harder to play against.

“There were gaps allowing teams to play through us. We have tightened up all-round and Steven MacLean was playing a bit further back against County.

“It could prove to be a valuable point. Ross County have shown they are a good side. They didn’t get away from us and we are another point further away from teams below us.

“Now we have three games coming up against Hearts, Dundee United and Kilmarnock as we look for the points required to make sure we are in the top six again.

“I think 42 points have usually got you into the top half for the split but it is hard to say what it will be this season.

“We have given Hearts two tough games already this season.

“Tynecastle is a place the lads like going to. We have a chance going there. But we need to maintain our discipline, our workrate and look for a bit more quality in the final third.”

Chris Millar could start against Hearts and Darnell Fisher is available after suspension.
