St Johnstone skipper back for cup semi

Dave Mackay.
Dave Mackay.

Captain Dave Mackay should be fit for tomorrow’s League Cup semi-final – but Murray Davidson and Chris Millar are still major doubts.

Manager Tommy Wright reported: “Dave Mackay will train. We’ll test Murray today and Chris Millar has done a bit of training. I’d say Dave is the only definite to play. It will be wait and see on the other two, they are still doubtful.

“Midge has done a little bit of light training. We would have liked him to have done more. We’ll make a decision after today and see what Chris and Murray can do.

“They have missed games before and we’ve done well. You can only play the hand that you’ve got in terms of injuries.

“We’ll be disappointed for the two players if they don’t make it but whoever replaces them will still be strong enough.”

Wright believes his players are in the right frame of mind for the Tynecastle clash.

“On the pitch the club has grown in stature over the past few years so we’ll be ready come Saturday,” he said. “We’re looking forward to it.

“It’s going to be a great atmosphere. The fact that so many Hibs fans will be there puts the expectation on them. Their support will be demanding success.

“There’s not the same intensity as the Scottish Cup so the week has been pretty low key for us and normal for the players. That’s the way we like it.”

He added: “Sometimes I plan what I say before a match, sometimes I don’t. It will depend on how I feel on Saturday morning.

“But I don’t think there is any real need for a lot of motivation. The players are well motivated and they are aggrieved that the supporters can’t all get tickets too.

“So I don’t think motivation will be a problem.”

The match will be played to a finish on the day but Saints won’t be practicing penalties.

Wright explained: “We didn’t practice them before Luzern, but did against Minsk and it didn’t work.

“I think we will leave it. But let’s hope we can win the game long before then.”
