Tim Visser is set to miss Scotland’s autumn Test campaign after suffering a suspected broken ankle.
The winger was stretchered off during Edinburgh’s Pro12 victory over Treviso at Murrayfield.
Play was halted midway throught the first half as Visser fell awkwardly and Edinburgh coach Alan Solomons said: “It looks pretty bad but we won’t find out for a day or two exactly how serious it is.”
Prop Willem Nel emerged as the home hero with the clinching try after the Italians had mounted a stirring fightback.
Edinburgh had ruled the high-speed opening exchanges and their enterprise was rewarded in the 12th minute.
Slick handling and a powerful surge by Dimitri Basilaia paved the way for full-back Greig Tonks to slide over in the corner.
The home fans roared again when they watched skipper Greig Laidlaw slot the conversion from the widest possible angle.
Then came the departure of Visser, minutes before Laidlaw was wide with a penalty bid.
Treviso came more into the picture in the approach to the break. And they clawed back three points via the boot of James Ambrosini as Edinburgh’s concentration wavered.
But there was still time for Laidlaw to restore his side’s lead after great work by Nick De Luca.
He repeated the dose early in the second half to give Edinburgh some breathing space.
However, the match was thrown back into the melting pot when substitute winger Luke McLean ploughed over for a Treviso try against the run of play.
Tobias Botes converted to narrow the gap to just three then levelled the issue with a penalty. But then came Nel’s salvage act, goaled by Laidlaw.
