Monster day on ARCHIE Mountain Challenge

Monday was a monster day in the Cairngorms for athletes doing the ARCHIE’s Mountain Challenge…with a staggering 16 peaks conquered between dawn and dusk.

Dr Ben Ulyatt said runners were truly put through their paces.

“The team really pressed on, adding another 16 Archies.

“This involved running several ultra-marathon legs over mountains, rock and snow.

“Having battled blizzards, hail, rain, mist, zero visibility, gale-force winds, waves and the odd stubborn Highland cow, we’ve been blessed with some fairer skies over the last couple of days.

“Still, we’ve had to contend with two-foot-deep snow in much of the Cairngorms.”

On Tuesday, the team headed out from Braemar towards Glenshee.

The hope is that they will reach Glencoe by Thursday.

Dr Ulyatt is keen to push the fundraising side of the challenge a record-breaking attempt to scale every mountain in Scotland measuring more than 1,000 metres in a human-powered relay.

He said: “We all know how important the children’s operating theatres are and ironically, I had first-hand experience of this when my seven-year-old daughter Alex needed an operation for a broken arm at the weekend.”

The team of intrepid athletes is running over the peaks and cycling and kayaking between them to raise funds to help sick children across Courier Country.
