The body of a man has been recovered from the foot of cliffs near Arbroath.
The grim find was made on Sunday afternoon after a member of the public is understood to have raised the alarm following the discovery of a number of personal items at the top of sheer sandstone cliffs near Seaton Den, around two and a half miles north of the town.
Coastguard teams from Montrose, Arbroath and Carnoustie were scrambled to the scene around noon, with officers from Police Scotland also attending.
Some of the personnel had been involved in an HM Coastguard Angus and Mearns representation at the Scottish and Southern Energy resilience open day in Dundee’s Camperdown Park when they were summoned to the scene of the tragedy.
The man’s body was found at the north corner of a bay on the popular coastal walking route.
Around a dozen coastguard personnel were involved in the operation to recover the dead man’s body and it was winched to the top of the cliffs around 2pm.
The victim’s age has not been confirmed and his identity will not be released until next of kin have been informed.
There are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.
