Residents evacuated after flooding on Stonehaven waterfront

Stonehaven waterfront has flooded after two days of foul weather.

Sandbags have been handed out to residents, and some residents evacuated following two days of rain.

Elderly residents are understood to have been evacuated from Turners Court sheltered housing near Stonehaven Harbour.

Police have issued a safety warning to members of the public in the seaside town, warning them to stay away from seafront areas of the town.

A release on the Police Scotland website said: “The weather is creating high waves and we would advise members of the public to keep themselves safe and out of danger by staying away from the seafront and harbour areas.

“The effects of the weather on the town, and other coastal towns and locations in our area, are being closely monitored and if any further action is required this will be communicated as widely as possible.”

The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency issued a flood alert on Tuesday morning.

They said: “Strong winds and surge will coincide with high astronomical tides on Tuesday and Wednesday morning.

“Large waves and spray overtopping are likely in areas exposed to the strong onshore winds. Flooding to low lying areas is possible.

“At this stage the period of greatest risk is high tide early Wednesday morning.”

Sandbags were delivered to the town in order to help deal with the flooding.

Local man, Bill Malcolm who lives on the Cowie side of Stonehaven said the sandbags given to him had done little to stop the flooding.

He said: “The waves, they just run up and keep running up.”

Flooding is expected to threaten large parts of northern and eastern Scotland overnight and into Wednesday morning.
