Two of Dundee’s special needs schools are overcrowded.
The Off-site Education Centre on Napier Drive, Dryburgh, and Kingspark School on Glenaffric Terrace are both operating well above capacity.
Kingspark should have no more than 125 pupils, but had 144 at last count, while the education centre in Dryburgh is 18 over capacity.
Education convener Stewart Hunter said the council was aware of the situation but said it could not be “fixed overnight”. Craigowl Primary School and Morgan Academy also have 30 pupils each more than they should have.
Arthur Forrest of the Educational Institute of Scotland said: “With Craigowl and Morgan, we raised that with the education committee over a year ago.
“We’ve had these concerns for quite a bit of time and were told they would be addressed.
“If they still haven’t, then the question has to be why not, particularly with Craigowl as it’s new.”
Mr Hunter said: “Craigowl has been an issue for a number of years, but Morgan is actually a good news story because more kids are staying on in fifth and sixth year so that’s positive.
“We recognise that more and more pupils are needing to go somewhere like Kingspark so we have agreed extra classrooms for there to try and create more space.”
