Council planners backing demolition of former student residence in Broughty Ferry

Plans to demolish a derelict student building in Dundee and use the site for new homes have been recommended for approval despite objections from the community.

Redholme on Gardyne Road has lain empty for a number of years and is a magnet for vandals and antisocial behaviour.

The building was formerly part of the Dundee College campus and Dundee University.

It is in a poor state of repair and was last used as a student residence before the site was sold in 2007.

Now Gardyne Developments has submitted plans to create seven houses on the site and councillors will vote on the proposals at Monday’s development management committee.

Council officers have described the proposed development as “satisfactory” and said it will help bring a dilapidated site back into attractive use.

However, Broughty Ferry Community Council has objected to the plans amid fears of over-development and issues with the design.

Three neighbours have also objected while one letter of support has been received.

There are also issues with a shortfall of parking spaces to serve four of the proposed buildings.

The site is accessed from a private drive off Gardyne Road, and a former road to the south leading on to Strathern Road has not been used for many years.

Objectors have raised concerns additional buildings will have an adverse impact on traffic on Gardyne Road, arguing Strathern Road would be better.

They also objected to trees being removed and of the potential homes overlooking neighbouring gardens.
