Gran who sparked missing person search was wanted for breaching payback order

A Dundee woman who sparked a police search this week after going missing with her grandson for almost two days has appeared in court on for breaching a community payback order earlier this year.

Debbie Duffy, 40, was traced with two-year-old Callum King in Dundee on Thursday after last being seen on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said she had intended to travel to Tayport with the youngster to visit relatives but didn’t arrive.

Hundreds of people posted appeals for information on social media before they were traced.

Police then discovered she was wanted on a warrant for breaching a community payback order handed out for road traffic offences.

Duffy, Forth Crescent, appeared from custody at Dundee’s Justice of the Peace Court today and admitted breaching the community payback order on September 23.

She had been ordered to complete 80 hours of unpaid work on August 20 after admitting driving without a licence or insurance in Dundee’s South Road in February.

The court heard that Duffy had not completed any of the order.

Solicitor Gary McIlravey said: “The breach is admitted. Nothing was done about the number of hours as she had her benefits sanctioned and moved out the property.

“She did not think to report this to the social work department. She has subsequently spoken to them but this report had been submitted to the court.

“Your honour may want to treat this as a community payback order review. Her benefits have been reinstated and she is going to undertake the hours.”

Justice of the Peace Muhammed Khalid told Duffy: “I will give you another opportunity to complete the order.

“You cannot take this lightly. If you do not comply you will be brought back and may be given a custodial sentence.”
