Knife-wielding robber stole can of lager and pound coin from man in Dundee

A 27-year-old man could be facing more than five years in prison after a jury found him guilty of assault and robbery.

Appearing at court on Friday, Darren Small, a prisoner at Barlinnie, was found guilty of assaulting Norman Robertson, presenting a knife at him and robbing him of a can of lager and a pound coin, on September 25 at Laing Place, Dundee, while on bail.

He was also found guilty of possessing a knife, while on bail.

Sheriff Kenneth McGowan told Small the assault and robbery had been carried out against an elderly gentleman “who was in an extremely frail condition.”

He said: “Based on his evidence and that of his partner, I’ve no doubt it was an extremely frightening experience for him.”

He added that each charge was aggravated by a breach of Small’s bail condition.

He said: “You have a propensity of disorder. This case represents a certain escalation in your behaviour.”

He said his sentencing powers only allowed him to impose a maximum of five years which he said was “not adequate” so he remitted Small to the High Court.
